Domnick Hunter Compressed Air Dryers Water Vapor Water vapor is water in gaseous form and will pass through water separators and coalescing filters just as easy as the compressed air. The ability of air to hold water vapor is dependent upon its pressure and its temperature. The higher the temperature, the more water vapor that can be held by the air, the higher the pressure, the greater amount of water vapor is squeezed out. As large volumes of air are drawn into the compressor and compressed, the temperature of the air increases significantly. This allows the heated air to easily retain the water vapor in the atmospheric air. Unlike water in a liquid or aerosol form which is removed from compressed air using a coalescing filter; water vapor (water in a gaseous form) can only be removed using a dryer.
Types of Compressed Air Dryers:
Desiccant Air Dryers Desiccant dryers remove water vapor by passing air over a regenerative adsorbent material known as desiccant which strips the moisture from the air. All desiccant air dryers remove water vapor using this method, however the adsorbent must be periodically regenerated to ensure a continuous supply of dry air, and a number of different regeneration methods are available.
Pressure dewpoint is the term used to describe the temperature at which condensation will occur and the water removal efficiency of a dryer is expressed as a pressure dewpoint (written as a temperature). The actual air temperature after a desiccant dryer is not the same as its dewpoint. Typically, a pressure dewpoint of -40°F (-40°C) is used in most applications as compressed air with a dewpoint below -14.8°F (-26°C) will not only prevent corrosion, it will also inhibit the growth of micro-organisms within the compressed air system. Desiccant air dryers (also known as regenerative air dryers) can be purchased in a tower tower dryer or modular dryer construction. Types include: heatless dryer, heated dryer, blower purge dryer and a high pressure air dryer. Point of use dryer and inline air dryer varieties bring clean dry air just where you need it at the point of use application.
Refrigerated Air Dryers:
In general purpose applications, refrigerated air dryers are often used in place of desiccant air dryers. Refrigerated air dryers remove water vapor by cooling the compressed air and collecting the condensed liquid. For this reason, they are limited to to positive pressure dewpoints to prevent freezing of the condensed liquid providing pressure dewpoints of 37.4°F ( 3°C), 44.6°F ( 7°C) or 50°F ( 10°C). This type of dryer will remove free water from the system and slow corrosion, however they will not inhibit bacterial growth and are not suitable for installations where piping is installed in ambient temperatures below the dryer dewpoint (i.e. systems with external air receivers and piping). Types include but are not limited to: thermal mass dryer and high temperature refrigeration.
Are all compressed air dryers the Same:
Compressed air purification equipment must deliver uncompromising performance and reliability while providing the right balance of air quality with the lowest cost of operation. Many manufacturers offer products for the filtration and purification of contaminated compressed air,

Of the ten major contaminants found in compressed air, nine are removed using filtration technology, however, are all compressed air and gas filters the same Compressed air purification equipment is essential to all modern production facilities. It must deliver uncompromising performance and reliability while providing the right balance of air quality with the lowest cost of operation. Today, many manufacturers offer products for the filtration and purification of contaminated compressed air, which are often selected only upon their initial purchase cost, with little or no regard for the air quality they provide, the cost of operation throughout their life or their environmental impact. When purchasing purification equipment, delivered air quality, the overall cost of ownership and the equipment's environmental impact must always be considered.
Water Separators:
Water separators are used to protect coalescing filters against bulk liquid contamination, where excessive cooling takes place in air receivers and distribution piping.Using mechanical separation techniques, Parker domnick hunter Water Separators will remove in excess of 92% bulk liquid contamination at all flow conditions.
Coalescing Compressed Air Filters:
Coalescing compressed air filters are probably the single most important items of purification equipment in a compressed air system. They are designed to not only remove aerosols (droplets) of oil and water using mechanical filtration techniques, but also to remove solid particulate to very low levels (as small as 0.01 micron in size). Installed in pairs, the first compressed air filter is a 'general purpose filter' which protects the second 'high efficiency filter' from bulk contamination. The dual filter installation from Parker domnick hunter ensures a continuous supply of high quality compressed air with the additional benefits of low operational costs and minimal maintenance.
Adsorption (Activated Carbon) Filters:
Oil vapor is oil in a gaseous form and will pass through a coalescing filter just as easily as the compressed air. Therefore, oil vapor removal filters must be employed as these provide a large bed of activated carbon adsorbent for the effective removal of oil vapor, providing the ultimate protection against oil contamination.
Sterile Filters:
Absolute removal of solid particulates and micro-organisms is performed by a sieve retention or membrane filter. They are often referred to as sterile air filters as they also provide sterilized compressed air. Filter housings are manufactured from stainless steel to allow for in-situ steam sterilization of both the filter housing and element. It is important to note that the piping between the sterile filter and the application must also be cleaned and sterilized on a regular basis. The quality of air required throughout a typical compressed air system will vary depending upon application. Treatment of the compressed air at only one point alone, for example the compressor room; is not enough and it is highly recommended that the compressed air is first treated prior to entry into the distribution system (to a quality level suitable for protecting air receivers and distribution piping) and then at the point of use, with specific attention being focused on the application and the level of air quality .

Desiccant dryers are extremely efficient and typically provide pressure dewpoints of -40°F (-40°C) or -100°F (-70°C).
